TV Review/Rant

For any of you out there who are completely uninterested in television, this blog post may not be for you.

For everyone else (but mainly for me to get it out of my system), here's my opinion on things:

I've faithfully watched The Biggest Loser since season 7, when my favorite contestant (Tara) inspired me to lose 20 lbs. Some seasons have definitely been more enjoyable than others, due to the fact that some contestants are more enjoyable to watch than others. Still, I always enjoy watching the contestants figure out their own strength, work through their issues, and transform their lives. The finale episodes are usually my favorite because nearly everyone looks so much happier and full of life. It seems like through the transformation process, the contestants are coming to life and discovering that they're free to choose and take control of their lives, and it's really beautiful to see. I generally find the show to be really uplifting, and I like to support uplifting TV shows, right?
So this season, I've been somewhat into it, but not as much as usual. There aren't very many contestants that I like (only Emily, Cassandra, and Megan), and one that makes my blood boil: Conda.

I can't remember ever liking Conda, or even being indifferent toward her. I've "TV hated" her from the beginning. I know that the contestants on BL are there because they have tons of issues (they self-medicate and try to escape their problems through food), but once on the show they are each presented with an equal opportunity to humble themselves, receive the help being offered, and change their lives. One of the biggest reasons why I can't stand Conda is because she refuses to let go of her pride, be a big girl, and deal with her issues. She's almost constantly rolling her eyes, whining, and saying childish things behind others' backs. I can certainly imagine how hard it would be to take responsibility for choices that have led you to morbid obesity, but it's a major component of the BL process, and something that you know you're getting into before you ever set foot on the ranch. So basically, you need to come to terms with that ASAP so you can progress. Conda refuses. It's more than just that, though! She poisons everyone around her with her negative attitude, snarky comments, dishonest gameplay, juvenile communication skills, and inability to address her issues (and those of others) like an adult. What kills me each new episode is how no one else seems to have picked up on how much her negativity affects them! They're oblivious! Each week, Conda seems to have wormed her way deeper and deeper into everyone's affections and esteem. They protect her and care about her to an extent that seems unjustified. Her trainer, Dolvett, has poured so much of his time and effort into training her and breaking down her walls, but she still sasses him and rolls her eyes whenever he asks her to do anything. It's frustrating to watch this mean, immature person run the show without regard for anyone's feelings but her own.

I think that the only reasons I haven't just given up on this season are my favorites (Emily, Cassandra, Megan), and because I keep waiting and hoping that something will happen to Conda to wake her sorry self up! So last night I watched the first hour of BL before NBC decided to cut it short to do an hour of premature election coverage (I say premature because the states that they were reporting on hadn't all gotten their numbers in yet, so it was just a chance for them to speculate rather than actually report. They didn't need to interrupt BL for speculation, in my opinion), then I watched the rest on hulu this morning. Unfortunately one of my favorites, Cassandra, was eliminated, and Conda has learned nothing. So I've decided that unless peeps can get the poison out of their systems, I'll keep watching until my other two faves aren't there anymore, but then I'm out.

I'll most likely spend my time watching New Girl and laughing my face off instead.

Do any of you watch The Biggest Loser? If not, what do you watch, and do you get as into it as I get into BL?

  1. I've enjoyed Downton Abbey and now I'm getting into Sherlock. Long episodes though. (We don't have cable, so it's gotta be on Netflix or online.)
