1st Bonfire of the Year!

So Tuesday night, we had our first bonfire of the year in our backyard pit. Yes, friends, we have a pit in our backyard. We originally dug the pit in order to have a pit BBQ for labor day last year. We're also incredibly fortunate to have a landlord who goes along with our exciting ideas (see my post about the living room redo and you'll get an idea of what I mean). So Jeff and I (but mostly Jeff) dug a pit that's about 3 ft. deep, and 4 ft. wide and across, then found some free bricks from Freecycle, and lined the pit with them. So the put looked about like this:
Jeff then procured some free firewood from a man who tore down his barn and didn't have any use for the wood (maybe because it was riddled with rusty nails....). So we built up a huge fire to get the right amount of coals to cook our 200-lb. pig.

We decided that we needed to roast a few marshmallows over the fire before it turned to coals. No sense wasting a perfectly good campfire, right?

We cooked the pig, pulled it apart and shared the meat with 30-40 friends.

So yes, we have a pit. After the pit BBQ on Labor Day we had a few bonfires until it got too cold to have them. It was really exciting to have our first bonfire of the year Tuesday night. The weather has been so nice that we just couldn't stop ourselves. We invited a few of our friends and mostly roasted hot dogs. I think only 3 of us had s'mores.

Clayton and Brittney are so adorable!

My cousins Camille, Emery and Ryan. The guys were down visiting from Boise.

Dan, Dan, the mustache man.
I'm really excited to have more bonfires this year. I love roasted hot dogs!

On an unrelated note, Tuesday night was also the night of the scout's cake auction! I mainly wanted to go so I could support my friends who are scout leaders, but it ended up being really really fun! Clayton was the auctioneer, and they couldn't have picked a better person for the job! So hilarious! I ended up with this cake, made by one of the scouts who pretends not to like me, but secretly does.
Isn't this such a cute little Easter basket?
The cake had a thin, chocolate torte on the bottom, and cupcakes, green coconut, robin eggs, and peeps on top. Jeff ate all of the peeps before we even got the cake home, so that's why they're not in this picture. This was the first cake to be auctioned off, and it was the one that I wanted, so after I snagged it I got to just sit back and watch everyone else fight it out for the remaining cakes.

I know next to nothing about scouting, since I only watched my brothers do it and never participated, but it was fun to get a glimpse into that world before we're thrown into it in about 8 years. It's exciting to think that we'll get to help our little man do things like that someday. :)
